In 2011, Shania Twain did something almost nobody could have predicted.

Just three years earlier, her seemingly perfect marriage had collapsed in one of the most painful scandals of her life. Now she was standing beside a new husband—and the identity of that man made the story almost unbelievable.

His name was Frédéric Thiébaud.

And he was the former husband of the very woman who had been at the center of Twain’s marriage crisis.

Twain’s marriage to producer Robert “Mutt” Lange ended after their 2008 separation, following reports that Lange had an affair with Marie-Anne Thiébaud, Twain’s friend and longtime associate. The divorce was finalized in June 2010.

Marie-Anne was married to Frédéric.

So while Twain was losing her husband, Frédéric was losing his wife.

Their lives had been shattered by the same betrayal.

At first, there was nothing romantic about what happened next.

Twain and Frédéric became sources of support for each other as they tried to make sense of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the collapse of both marriages. Twain later described him as a close friend and someone who understood what she was experiencing because he had suffered the same kind of heartbreak.

Slowly, however, friendship became something more.

By 2009, Twain had confirmed that she and Frédéric were together. Their relationship attracted enormous attention because of the almost unbelievable connection between their former marriages.

For Twain, though, this was not about creating a sensational story.

It was about finding someone who understood her pain.

She had spent years building an image of confidence and strength. But after the divorce, she faced a deeply personal crisis that affected more than her private life. She struggled emotionally and also experienced serious problems with her singing voice, eventually receiving treatment for dysphonia.

Then came another surprise.

In December 2010, Twain and Frédéric announced their engagement.

Less than two weeks later, they were married.

On January 1, 2011, the couple exchanged vows at sunset in Rincon, Puerto Rico, surrounded by about 40 close friends and family members.

It was an astonishing ending to a story that had begun with betrayal and heartbreak.

The woman who had once wondered how she would ever recover from the collapse of her marriage had found love again—but not in some distant stranger.

She had found it in someone who had experienced the same devastation.

Their relationship became a remarkable example of how two people can meet at the worst moment of their lives and somehow help each other rebuild.

To outsiders, the situation sounded almost impossible to imagine.

To Shania Twain, it became a second chance.

The scandal that had once destroyed her world had unexpectedly brought someone into her life who understood exactly what she had lost.

And in January 2011, she made the decision that stunned everyone:

She married him.

What began as shared heartbreak had become a new beginning.
